A Taste of Tradition: The Rich History of Philippine Coffee
Before coffee shops became the go-to hangout spots and caffeine fueled our daily grind, coffee had already rooted itself deep in Philippine history. Our love for this rich, aromatic drink dates back to 1740, when a Spanish Franciscan friar introduced the first coffee tree to Lipa, Batangas. The volcanic soil and tropical climate proved to be perfect for cultivation, and soon, coffee farming flourished. By the 1800s, the Philippines became one of the world’s top four coffee exporters, shipping beans to Spain, America, and beyond. At one point, Lipa was dubbed the "Coffee Capital of the Philippines," and local farmers were supplying nearly all of the coffee in Asia.
But just as the industry was thriving, disaster struck. In the late 19th century, a fungal disease known as coffee rust wiped out crops in Batangas, devastating the once-booming industry. Many farmers shifted to alternative crops like sugarcane, and the Philippines’ reign as a coffee powerhouse came to a halt. Fortunately, coffee production didn’t disappear entirely. It simply moved to new regions like Benguet, Bukidnon, and Mindanao, where different coffee varieties were cultivated, ensuring that the country’s coffee legacy endured.
Unlike other coffee-producing nations that specialize in just one or two bean varieties, the Philippines is uniquely home to all four major types of coffee: Arabica, Robusta, Excelsa, and Liberica (Kapeng Barako). This diversity allows us to produce a wide range of flavors, from the smooth and chocolatey notes of Benguet Arabica to the bold and smoky richness of Batangas Barako. Each region has its signature brew, influenced by its distinct climate, altitude, and soil composition, making Philippine coffee a hidden gem in the global market.
Today, the Philippine coffee industry is experiencing a resurgence, thanks to the growing appreciation for local beans and the rise of specialty coffee culture. More farmers are using sustainable farming methods, and homegrown roasters and cafés are proudly showcasing 100% Philippine coffee to the world. With movements supporting direct trade and farm-to-cup initiatives, Filipino coffee is once again gaining international recognition. The next time you sip on a locally brewed cup, remember—you’re not just drinking coffee, you’re tasting centuries of tradition, resilience, and passion.
At Kape Warehouse, we honor this legacy by offering over 14 variants of premium Philippine coffee beans, sourced from the best coffee-growing regions in the country.
